Desejos de um bagre

Barefoot, bare-chested, I stood in thick grass

Descalça e de peito nu permaneci na grama alta
around the edge of our pond while Daddy

na margem de nosso lago enquanto papai
strung fresh chicken liver on fishhooks

ajeitava o figado de galinha no anzol
and cast his line into the middle.

Up the hill, I filled a three-pound

in the deepest darkest water,

burrowed down in the muck.

“Daddy, I wish I was a catfish,” I said.

I wanted to soak in the mud in water so murky

Eu queria sumir no meio da lama tão fundo 
I couldn’t see the large-mouth bass

que não veria aquela imensa boca 
pass an inch in front of my eyes

passar a um centímetro de meus olhos.

He baited my hook and let me cast the line out,

Ele ajeitou meu anzol e deixou que lançasse  
the liver flew off mid-flight

o pedaço de fígado que voou alto 
and I stood in tangles of fishing line,

enquanto fiquei agitando a linha de pesca,
thinking of hunkering down there forever,

pensando em me acomodar no fundo para sempre

wanting to be just like him.
